NEW FRONTIERS in CONSTRUCTION
CERC’s Spring Conference is a multi-disciplinary annual conference that strives to inform on a wide variety of important, current and emerging issues affecting the Built Environment industry. The conference is comprised of panels, round-tables, workshops, and poster presentations, and is designed to encourage substantive interaction among participants.

PRE-CONFERENCE
Join Dr. Yong Woo Kim on Wednesday, March 14th for the pre-conference, A Missing Link in Reliable Planning. The workshop includes two presentations and panel discussion on reliable production planning and the UW’s journey to Lean construction. 9:15 AM - Keynote: Taming Multidimensional Complexity of Major Projects
Professor Klemt-Albert is director of the department Construction Management and Digital Engineering at Leibniz University in Hanover, Germany. In her previous position, she was heading as CTO an international engineering and consulting company with 1,500 associates, realizing major projects worldwide with focus on Germany, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore and China.
Major projects are a big challenge for responsible engineers and owners due to their multidimensional complexity. Analyzed systematically, there are four big challenges interacting in design and realization of Mega Projects. Besides obvious challenges in technique and project management, there are challenges in communication and culture, which are, though soft components, crucial for success.
Answering the question, how digital engineering contributes to master complexity in major projects, Prof. Klemt-Albert will focus on research and the current state of implementation of Building Information Modeling in the European and German infrastructure.

1:30 PM - Keynote: From Vision to Implementation: a Converging Pathway of an Eco-System of Construction Innovation
Xiangyu Wang. The world is now in the early stages of the fourth industrial revolution, which are bringing together digital and physical systems. Dramatic changes are all around us across all sectors, happening at exponential speed. The vision of tomorrow’s construction, as part of the fourth industrial revolution is a highly dynamic, customized and resource-friendly smart industry.
Today’s construction processes could become highly integrated and situation-awareness systems with a significant portion of embedded intelligences, where digital systems (e.g., design, information, communication) and physical systems (e.g., machines/equipment, raw materials, labor) are coming together within an “Internet of Everything” and cooperatively drive construction. Physical resources find their way independently through the logistics and construction processes.
To move towards the vision more effectively, inter-disciplinary approaches are not sufficient but a converging way will replace. This keynote presents a pathway of converging research that creates an eco-system which integrates industry and academia together. This partially proved pathway is also further underpinned by enumerating a variety of emerging integrations of new business models, disruptive technologies and innovative management philosophies.
