National BIM Standard-US 2025 Implementation Study
This report summarizes the findings of a study led by the University of Washington’s Communication, Technology, and Organizational Practices (CTOP) lab, in collaboration with John Messner (Penn State) and Johnny Fortune (AECO Digitech). The US construction industry continues to define and implement standards for Building Information Management (BIM). The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) released its latest National BIM Standard-US (NBIMS-US), Version 4.0, with four modules, in 2023, to support the implementation BIM in the US construction industry. The survey findings suggest that some industry organizations are considering the implementation of the NBIMS-US V4 standard and its modules, while others have implemented some of the V4 modules as of 2025. This reports summarizes these findings and lessons learned during the industry’s implementation of the standard, and feedback from the industry. In addition to the survey results, this report includes use cases of NBIMS-US V4 implementation by different organizations. These use cases provide a roadmap for the industry, offer insight into the implementation process through lessons learned, and motivate owner organizations to standardize BIM-based project delivery.
